• With full dues-paying union membership, a housestaff member here for the full 3 years of the contract stands to see a net gain between $21,332 and $23,697! *assuming you are a PGY1 to PGY6 this academic year

    • If you want a say in your union (like voting to approve our union contract and how we’re governed), you have to be a member!

    • Having a strong majority of our unit as members signals to UMMC that we’re a strong, united union that’s willing to act. This means we have the power to enforce any violations of the non-monetary aspects of our contract that may come up over time.

    • Less Membership = Less Power = Weaker Contract Enforcement Capability

    • Membership shows that you support your co-residents and fellows on the bargaining and governance teams, reflecting our solidarity as a union.

    • Plus, since everyone will benefit from our union contract, you’ll have to pay an agency fee/financial core fee regardless of whether you choose to be a member or not. So why not become a member and be able to have direct voting power?

    • Everyone benefits from all aspects of our union contract, regardless of whether or not they’re a member

    • Because everyone benefits, non-members still pay an agency/financial core fee

      • For 2025-2026 this fee = 1.03% of base pay

      • Can be compared to dues of 1.5% of base pay if you were a full dues-paying member

    • Too many non-members weakens our union’s power to enforce any violations of the non-monetary aspects of our contract that may come up over time.

    • Less Membership = Less Power = Weaker Contract Enforcement Capability

    • There is a fees/dues difference of only a few hundred dollars per year between members and non-members, and greater membership means our union has more power and leverage against UMMC. So why not become a member to help us fight for a continually strong contract and have direct voting power?

    • Yes – regardless of when you graduate, your membership is an important sign of support.

    • Graduating residents and fellows make up a big chunk of our unit, and we need your solidarity!

    • Even if you’re just with us for one more year, under the first year of our contract, union members stand to see a net gain of between $2,980 and $3,686 depending on PGY level! In comparison, non-union members would see an additional “savings” of only $320 to $426, which is not all that much when compared to the potential loss of collective strength

    • Sign now rather than later – a strong membership base helps us show our solidarity and power so that our union can better work on our behalf!

    • You have a 1 month (31 day) grace period to sign from the effective date of our contract or the beginning of employment, whichever is later

    • But if you need more time to make a decision, make sure you are taking advantage of any info or orientation sessions we are hosting

    • You can also always email us at info@umrfa.org with questions!

    • This membership card is different from the union authorization card you may have signed last year in 2024 before our election to unionize.

    • Now that we are unionized, you have to sign this new card to actually become a member!

    • If you’re not sure if you signed the membership card yet – check your email junk folder for a confirmation from edues@aft.org titled “Thank you for keeping our union strong!” or email info@umrfa.org to ask!

Our union is only as strong as our members—being a member will add to our collective strength, help us stand up to UMMC, and allow you to have a say in what we do with this power. A strong, united membership gives us the power to enforce our new union contract and win what we’re fighting for in future bargaining.
